Archaeologists have uncovered a stone sarcophagus near a previously unknown church at Lincoln Castle. They believe it dates to about 900AD and contains the remains of a member of Saxon nobility or a bishop. The archaeologists hope to conduct digital reconstruction on the skeleton once it’s opened.
Since the levels of the site date from 400AD to the 20th century, archaeologists have also dug up the remains of a Roman townhouse, skeletal remains of other individuals, pottery, cooking pots, and ice skates.
The archaeologists, who finished this week, have been working at Lincoln Castle for almost a year. They assisted with the conservation and refurbishment of the site for the future home of one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.
