Last Friday (August 8th) authorities released the names of two of the six people whose bodies were discovered in two cars by police testing sonar equipment in Oklahoma’s Foss Lake last September.
The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s office said two of the bodies belonged to Jimmy Allen Williams, 16, who went missing in 1970 and Cleburn Hammack, 42, who went missing in 1969. Hammack was pulled from a 1952 Chevrolet and Williams was recovered from a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. The medical examiner’s autopsy reports noted that neither Williams nor Hammack appeared to have trauma and both deaths were likely due to accidental drowning.
Police believe two of the three bodies pulled from the 1952 Chevy belonged to a couple who went missing in the 1960’s, on their way to Foss Lake. In October the police did not know the identity of the third body.
The second car, the 1969 Camaro, also had three bodies inside, but they believe the remains belong to three teenagers reported missing in November of 1970. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Williams, Thomas Michael Rios, 18, and Leah Gail Johnson, 18, were last seen in Williams’ Camaro on their way to a football game in Elk City on November 20th, 1970. In October, police reported that the Camaro showed signs that it was involved in an accident. Damage to the radiator fan, a motor mount, and the fuel pump was caused by an impact when it hit the water, suggesting that the car was running when it hit the water.
Local authorities have not formally identified all of the remains.
